Cameron Parish, La. The Sabine Pass Lighthouse, also known as Sabine Pass Light, is a historic lighthouse located on the Louisiana side of the Sabine River, across from Sabine Pass, Texas. It was first lit in 1857 and was deactivated by the Coast Guard in 1952. The lighthouse is one of only three built in the United States of similar design and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 17, 1981. It is now abandoned but continues to be the subject of preservation efforts. The lighthouse's unique design features brick supports that fan out near the bottom of the structure, providing extra support for its location in the marshy ground. It has survived many hurricanes and has been a site of conflict during the Civil War. The lighthouse's history is a testament to its resilience and the efforts to preserve its legacy. The Sabine Pass Lighthouse, a historic structure in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, is currently undergoing restoration efforts. The lighthouse, which has survived numerous hurricanes and has been deactivated since 1952, is being restored by volunteers and private donations. The restoration process includes addressing challenges such as soft soil, fallen bricks, and access issues due to a broken staircase. The project is supported by the Cameron Preservation Alliance, which has been actively working to stabilize the lighthouse and secure funding for further restoration. The lighthouse is also a symbol of the state's resilience and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
